Quick answer: To learn how to get from Fort Lauderdale airport to Miami, choose by budget, luggage and timing. A commuter train with a free airport shuttle is cheapest but slowest. Taxis, rideshare apps, rental cars and shared shuttles are faster. A private car is simplest for groups and heavy bags. See FLL transportation.

Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International (FLL) is about 25 to 30 miles from most Miami destinations, depending on whether you are going to Aventura, downtown, Brickell, Miami Beach or Miami International Airport. The drive is usually straightforward on paper and unpredictable in practice.

This guide lists every realistic option, with honest notes on when each one makes sense. Schedules, fares and routes change, so check the official pages before you travel.

How far it is and how long it takes

Travel guides put Miami and Miami Beach roughly 28 to 30 miles from FLL. The Broward County Aviation Department says a ride to PortMiami takes about 45 minutes without traffic, and it advises allowing at least 90 minutes, especially during rush hour.

That is a good rule for the whole trip. Weekday mornings heading south and weekday late afternoons in either direction are the slow windows. Friday evenings, holiday weekends, event nights and cruise days can add more time. A live map on the day of travel will give the best estimate.

Option by option

Here is how each way of getting to Miami works from FLL.

Commuter train with free airport shuttleAbout 1.5 to 2 hours or more including shuttle and transfersLow to medium. Shuttle to the station, then train, then a transfer in MiamiManageable with one or two bagsSolo travelers on a budget with time to spare

Rideshare apps45 to 90 minutes depending on trafficMedium. Walk to a pickup zone, wait for a carDepends on the carLight luggage, flexible timing
Rental car45 to 90 minutes plus rental counter timeMedium. Shuttle to the Rental Car CenterExcellentTravelers who need a car in Miami

Private car45 to 90 minutes, with no waiting for other ridersHigh. Pre-arranged from the curbExcellentGroups, families, heavy luggage, early or late flights, fixed arrival times

Times are estimates, not guarantees. Traffic on the main north-south highways decides most of the difference.

The commuter train and the airport shuttle

The commuter train does not stop at the terminals. A free shuttle bus runs from the airport to the station a few miles away. The airport lists shuttle stops at the west end of Terminal 1, between Terminals 3 and 4, and as posted for Terminal 2. The train line connects Fort Lauderdale with Miami and West Palm Beach.

The train serves a Miami International Airport station. It does not go to PortMiami, so cruise passengers need a taxi or another ride from the Miami stations. If your hotel is in Brickell, downtown or Miami Beach, expect a further transfer after you step off the train.

An intercity passenger train also runs an airport shuttle from the airport to its downtown Fort Lauderdale station. The airport lists it as running daily from 7 AM to 8 PM, with a flat one-way fare. That works if you plan to ride that train south, but check current hours first. Phone numbers and schedules are on the operator websites.

The county bus

Broward County Transit Route 1 runs daily from a stop at the Rental Car Center. The airport says it goes to Aventura. From there you can connect to Miami-Dade buses toward other parts of Miami. No bus runs directly between FLL and Miami International Airport.

It is the cheapest option and the slowest. It works for a solo traveler with a small bag and no deadline. It is a poor fit if you are tired, carrying luggage or arriving after dark.

Taxis, rideshare apps and rental cars

Taxi dispatch podiums stand at each terminal. Fares are regulated. The airport page currently lists estimates of $72 to Miami International Airport and $80 to South Beach. Estimates can change with fuel surcharges, so check the airport page before you go.

Rideshare apps pick up from marked areas, not the main curb. The airport directs riders at Terminals 1 and 2 to turn left after leaving the terminal, and riders at Terminals 3 and 4 to the first floor of the southern Palm Garage. Prices change with demand, so expect a different number at different hours.

The Rental Car Center is next to Terminal 1 and houses 12 companies. Shuttles run every 10 minutes, all day and night. A rental makes sense if you plan to drive around Miami. It makes less sense if you only need one transfer, because Miami parking and tolls add cost and stress.

Shuttles and private cars

Shared shuttle vans take several passengers to different stops, so the ride is cheaper per person but longer. Ask the provider for your drop-off order and pickup window before you book.

A private car is a pre-arranged ride for your party only. It suits families, groups, business travelers, anyone with heavy luggage, and early-morning or late-night arrivals when other options are thin. The airport sends pre-arranged limousines, sedans and vans to designated lower-level curbside areas.

ART books rides in advance and confirms a price before you travel. We offer sedans for up to 3 passengers, and SUVs and Premium SUVs for up to 6. See starting fares on the Fort Lauderdale airport page. Visiting with children? Child seats are $20 per seat per transfer, and our family transportation page covers more. Heading to a ship? See PortMiami transportation.

Which option fits your trip

A solo traveler with a carry-on and a free afternoon will do fine on the train. A couple with two suitcases, a hotel in Miami Beach and a dinner reservation will probably prefer a taxi or rideshare. A group of five landing at midnight, a family with car seats, or a team going to a conference needs a car that is waiting, not a queue.

Be honest about your day. If your arrival is flexible and the bags are light, save money. If a missed connection or a long wait would cost more than the fare, book a car. For a trip that starts in Miami and returns to the airport, the same rules apply in reverse.
